Gawie Marx : General Manager

Gawie was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in 1997.  During a 2 year battle and after a successful bone marrow transplant from his brother, Johan, he made a full recovery.  Gawie is a born survivor and has a passion for people from all walks of life.  Gawie has been based in Paarl for the past 8 years, where he was the General Manager at the 5 star Grande Roche Hotel and Pearl Valley Golf & Country Estate.  Gawie says:  “My vision for St Stephen is to ensure that we offer a world class facility offering excellent care, always keeping the patient’s wellbeing close at heart.”  Gawie is married to Sonika and they have twin boys.  He is an avid tennis player having competed in the World Transplant Games representing South Africa since 2001.

René Geldenhuys : Clinical Manager

René, a Registered Nurse who is passionate about people.  It makes her truly happy when she is working with a great team with the same values and beliefs as her own, caring for ill patients and their loved ones. René has a holistic care approach and strives to follow a care model that is transparent and engages one on one while meeting each patient’s needs from where they are in their life. She believes that each patient is unique and should be treated as such.  Every person has a right to the best quality of life which is the driving force behind her passion. She feels that by building relationships of trust and by living her core value of impact, that she can achieve a positive change in the life of every person that crosses her path and leave this world a better place in which she has found it.

Sue Hart : Radiotherapist

Sue is the resident radiotherapist at St Stephen and one of the pioneer members of staff.  She is responsible for the 3D planning and treatment of cancer patients.  Her patients care comes first and her positive outlook and attention for detail enables utmost trust and understanding of treatment and processes for her patients.

Dr Lydia Punt : Oncologist from the Coertse, Sauer and Partners Inc. 

Lydia was born and bred in Paarl and receiving her Medical Degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 1992.  She worked as a General Practitioner for 13 years and found an interest in Oncology.  She completed her MMed (RadOnc) in 2008 and embarked on the profession of Clinical Oncology from 2009. Lydia has a passion for the local and surrounding rural communities and her deep-seated spirituality enables her to relate to her patients with the utmost compassion, love and kindness.

Dr Lizelle Fourie : Oncologist

Lizelle comes with nearly 20 years medical experience and is a renowned Honorary Lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch.  Practicing throughout South Africa, Lizelle takes on a holistic approach with treatment, empowering her patients to understand their cancer, their treatment and recovery.  As an academic, for Lizelle knowledge is power and all questions are answered when it comes to this genetic disease for her patients to make informed decisions.

Dr Johanna “Joey” de Jager  Romero : St Stephen General Practitioner

Joey is a doctor with a special interest in palliative care, care of the elderly and emergency medicine.  Qualifying at the University of Pretoria gave her the opportunity to work abroad in the U.K. for 19 years. Upon completion of her degree in palliative care at the University of Cardiff, she dedicated 8 years to oncology and palliative care in North Wales. Returning to Paarl, she continues her commitment to post-operative, post-stroke and general rehabilitation of patients and is the general practitioner at the St Stephen Oncology hospital. Her main passion being palliative care, she is also involved with Drakenstein Hospice providing advice and support to the staff involved in home based care of private and government supported patients.  Being an avid traveller, Johanna enjoys visits abroad, and feels privileged to raise her children in beautiful Paarl.
